Playthrough, the usual name for a wagering requirement, is the total of bets a casino wants to see placed before a bonus balance becomes withdrawable. What it costs you depends on two inputs: the base the multiplier is applied to (only the bonus, or deposit and bonus together) and the house edge of the games you play. This guide explains both, then runs the real terms of the casinos we review through worked examples, as published on 15 October 2026.

What does a wagering requirement mean?

A wagering requirement tells you how many times a sum must be bet before a bonus can be withdrawn. “25x” at Slot Owl means 25 times the deposit plus the bonus; “40x” at BitStarz means 40 times the bonus only. Every bet counts at its full stake, win or lose, so EUR 2,000 of turnover can come from far less money cycling through the slot.

Turnover is not the same as money spent. Suppose you start with EUR 130 and bet EUR 1 a spin. Every win goes back into the balance, and later spins are paid for partly by earlier wins. That is how EUR 130 can produce several thousand euros of bets before it runs out. What the casino keeps on average is the house edge on all that turnover, which is why the multiplier matters more than the headline percentage.

Three more terms usually sit beside the multiplier: a time limit, a cap on each bet while the bonus is active, and a cap on how much bonus money can ever become cash. Each one is covered below with the figures our reviewed casinos publish.

Deposit plus bonus or bonus only: why the base matters

The same multiplier can mean twice as much play depending on the base. On the Malta and Estonia-licensed sites we cover, playthrough applies to the qualifying deposit and the bonus together. At BitStarz and 7Bit Casino, it applies to the bonus alone. On a 100% match, a deposit-plus-bonus multiplier is effectively double the same number quoted on the bonus only.

Put a EUR 75 deposit with a EUR 75 match through both versions of 40x. On the bonus alone the target is 40 x EUR 75, or EUR 3,000 of bets. On deposit plus bonus it is 40 x EUR 150, or EUR 6,000. The offer page usually says which base it uses; the general bonus terms at Slot Owl, Quickz, Taste Vegas, Slot Pony and Goldroll state it outright, saying wagering “refer[s] to the qualifying deposit and the bonus awarded”.

No-deposit bonuses follow a different rule. Because nothing was paid in, those same general terms say wagering counts only the bonus amount. Sportsbook bonuses at those sites default to 16 times the bonus unless a promotion says otherwise, a much lower figure because sports bets carry a larger margin per bet and pay out less often.

How do you calculate the expected cost of a bonus?

Multiply the total turnover by the house edge of the games you play. A slot with a 96% return to player has a 4% edge, so EUR 3,250 of turnover costs about EUR 130 on average. Compare that cost with the bonus you received: if the bonus is larger, the offer has positive expected value; if smaller, you are paying for extra playing time.

The formula in one line: expected cost = (multiplier x base) x (1 – RTP). A few cautions keep it honest:

  • It is an average across many players. Your own result will swing much more than the average suggests, especially on high-volatility slots.
  • You cannot lose more than your balance. When the expected cost is bigger than the deposit plus bonus, most players will run out of money before they finish, and the bonus ends at zero.
  • RTP differs by game and sometimes by version. Look at the information screen of the slot you plan to use rather than assuming 96%.
  • Games that count only partly towards playthrough raise the true turnover sharply (see the weighting section).

Our rating method scores bonus fairness on exactly this: wager-free offers and 25x sit at the top of the scale, 45-50x near the bottom.

Worked example 1: Slot Owl’s 25x on deposit plus bonus

Slot Owl’s first euro stage doubles a deposit up to EUR 500, and the deposit plus bonus must be wagered 25 times within 48 hours, with spins capped at EUR 5. It is the lowest playthrough on any cash match we review, so it makes a good baseline for the arithmetic that follows.

Deposit EUR 65 and the match adds EUR 65. The base is EUR 130, and 25 x EUR 130 gives EUR 3,250 of slot bets. At a 4% edge, the expected cost of that turnover is EUR 130, against a EUR 65 bonus, so the average player ends EUR 65 below where a bonus-free session would leave them. That is still the mildest result in this guide. At the EUR 5 bet ceiling you need at least 650 spins inside the 48 hours; at EUR 1 a spin, 3,250. Only games in the “Bonus Games” section count, and the most the bonus can turn into cash is five times the bonus amount, here EUR 325. Our Slot Owl review covers the fee clause that comes with the account.

Worked example 2: Taste Vegas at 45x, then 35x

Taste Vegas asks for 45 times deposit plus bonus on its first match and 35 times on its third and fifth, each to be finished inside 48 hours, and it limits every spin to EUR 5 meanwhile. That first-stage figure is the highest among our reviewed casinos, and the drop to later stages shows how much a multiplier changes the cost.

Take a smaller deposit this time: EUR 35, matched with EUR 35. The base is EUR 70; 45 x EUR 70 is EUR 3,150 of bets. On a 96% slot that turnover costs EUR 126 on average, three and a half times the bonus. Run the same EUR 35 on the third stage at 35x and the target falls to EUR 2,450, with an expected cost of EUR 98. Both are negative, but the second loses EUR 28 less on average for the same money. Every match stage is optional, so it is reasonable to skip the first and take a later one, or to decline all of them and play with cash.

Worked example 3: Quickz at 40x inside 48 hours

Quickz sets 40 times deposit plus bonus on each of its three cash matches, with 48 hours to finish and EUR 5 as the largest stake allowed with bonus money. The time limit is the binding constraint here, because a large deposit creates more turnover than an evening of play can produce.

Deposit EUR 110 on the first stage and the 100% match brings the balance to EUR 220. Forty times that is EUR 8,800 of bets inside two days. Even at the EUR 5 maximum, that is 1,760 spins, roughly 37 an hour around the clock. Expected cost at a 4% edge: EUR 352, against EUR 110 of bonus. The practical lesson is that a small deposit can be completed while a large one rarely can, and an unfinished bonus is forfeited with whatever it has won. Quickz’s free-spin stages work differently: spin winnings need no further play, up to EUR 1,000 per stage.

Worked example 4: BitStarz, 40x the bonus in seven days

BitStarz sets 40 times the bonus amount on every bonus, including free-spin winnings, and gives welcome bonuses seven days. Because the base is the bonus alone, the same 40 is much lighter than Quickz’s. The bet limit while wagering is 5 EUR/USD/USDT or the coin equivalent, such as 0.00006 BTC.

A crypto example: deposit 0.006 BTC and receive a 0.006 BTC match. The target is 40 x 0.006, or 0.24 BTC of bets, within seven days. At a 4% edge the expected cost is 0.0096 BTC, more than one and a half times the bonus. At the 0.00006 BTC bet cap, that turnover takes at least 4,000 spins, or about 572 a day. Compare it with deposit-plus-bonus rules: the same multiplier on 0.012 BTC would double every figure. Our BitStarz review lists the weekly offers that follow the welcome package.

Worked example 5: 7Bit Casino’s EUR 1 bet limit

7Bit Casino uses 35 times the bonus, gives 14 days, and caps bets at EUR 1 per spin while a welcome bonus runs. A low bet cap stretches the time needed rather than the cost: the expected loss depends on turnover, and turnover is fixed by the multiplier, so the cap only decides how many spins it takes.

Deposit EUR 50 and take a 100% first-stage match of EUR 50. At 35x the bonus, the target is EUR 1,750. Expected cost at a 4% edge: EUR 70, about EUR 20 more than the bonus. At no more than EUR 1 a spin, you need 1,750 spins or more, about 125 a day over two weeks. That is feasible for a regular player and tedious for an occasional one. Spin winnings at 7Bit carry the same 35x, so they are not wager-free.

Bet limits, conversion caps and voided winnings

A bet limit caps each stake for as long as bonus money is in play, and one oversized spin can cost you the bonus plus every win attached to it. A conversion cap is the most bonus money that can ever become withdrawable cash. Both are standard: EUR 5 per spin and five times the bonus at the Malta and Estonia-licensed sites we review, EUR 1 at 7Bit Casino.

The general bonus terms at Slot Owl, Winsly, Quickz, Taste Vegas, Slot Pony and Goldroll define the bet limit as EUR 5 per slot spin (NZ$8 or NOK 50 in those currencies) until playthrough is complete, and they apply it to gamble or double-up features too. Raising the stake after a big win is the most common way players lose a bonus by accident. Section 8.7 of the same terms caps conversion from a first-deposit or reload bonus at five times the bonus claimed. If a EUR 40 bonus turns into EUR 900 by the time playthrough ends, only EUR 200 of the bonus part is withdrawable.

The terms also list play patterns treated as abuse while a bonus is open: covering most outcomes of a round with bonus money (their threshold is more than 67% of the possible outcomes), switching from a low-weighted game to slots after a big win, or a large bet followed by many tiny ones purely to clear playthrough. Most players never come near these rules, but they explain why a bonus can be removed at withdrawal.

Game weighting: why table games barely count

Game weighting sets how much of each bet counts towards playthrough. Slots usually count 100%. Table, live and instant-win games count far less: BitStarz’s terms give them about 5% and progressive jackpots 0%. At 5%, every EUR 1 bet clears only five cents of the requirement, so a bonus meant for slots becomes almost impossible to finish on blackjack.

Return to the BitStarz example. Clearing 0.24 BTC of playthrough on a game weighted at 5% would need 4.8 BTC of actual bets. Even with blackjack’s low edge, that volume would cost more than slot play. The Malta and Estonia-licensed sites take another route: only games in their “Bonus Games” section count at all, and the abuse clause uses table games at 10% as its example of a low-weighted game. Check the eligible list before you sit down at a live table with a bonus active.

Expiry: claim windows and playthrough deadlines

Every bonus carries at least one clock. The cash matches at Slot Owl, Quickz, Taste Vegas, Slot Pony and Goldroll must be completed within 48 hours; BitStarz allows seven days for welcome bonuses; 7Bit Casino allows 14 days. Free spins under the shared Malta and Estonia terms stay valid for seven days once credited, and any left unused are lost.

Those windows interact with the multiplier. Take a 25x playthrough: 48 hours is generous for a EUR 30 deposit and very tight for EUR 400. The same deadline at 45x leaves even less room. A useful habit is to work out the spins needed before you deposit: turnover divided by your usual stake, then divided by the hours you will actually play. If the answer looks like a full-time job, deposit less or skip the bonus.

Wager-free spins and how they compare

Wager-free spins pay their winnings as cash, with no playthrough on what they win. Winsly’s whole welcome offer works this way: up to 7,000 spins worth EUR 0.10 each over six deposits, with free-spin winnings capped at EUR 5,000 across the promotion. Goldroll, Quickz, Taste Vegas and Slot Pony also pay spin winnings free of playthrough, with a EUR 1,000 cap per stage at the last three.

The value is easy to compute because nothing has to be replayed. A EUR 130 first deposit at Winsly earns two spins per euro, 260 spins with a face value of EUR 26; at 96% RTP their expected return is about EUR 25. Set beside a cash match, the comparison is stark: the EUR 65 Slot Owl bonus above carries an expected cost of EUR 130 to unlock, while the spins carry none. Two conditions remain. Your own deposit needs one full round of play before a cash-out, and Winsly delivers its spins in five daily batches that must each be claimed within 24 hours. Our Winsly review shows the full spin schedule.

Cashback: a rebate, not a bonus to chase

Cashback returns part of what you lost over a period. Quickz and Taste Vegas pay 10% of weekly real-money slot losses, up to 20% for loyalty ranks in selected countries, with a 1x playthrough; Winsly’s bonus terms cap casino cashback at 10% of real-money losses. Cashback reduces the cost of play you would have done anyway; it never makes play profitable.

Suppose a week at Quickz ends EUR 210 down on slots. The 10% cashback returns EUR 21, which must be played through once before withdrawal, so the week cost EUR 189 rather than EUR 210. A 1x playthrough on EUR 21 has an expected cost of under a euro at a 4% edge, which makes cashback one of the cleanest forms of bonus value. The catch is behavioural: chasing a bigger refund means losing more first.

Which payment methods block a bonus?

Wallets and prepaid vouchers are where bonuses most often fail to trigger. Frenwall’s two sites switch off any casino match when the money arrives from Jeton, MiFinity, Neteller or Skrill, while the Malta-licensed group names Neteller, Skrill and Paysafe Card as examples of excluded methods. If you want a match, fund that deposit by card, instant bank transfer or Apple Pay. Method-by-method detail is on our payment methods page.

A five-step check before you accept any bonus

Read the offer page shown to your own country, then the general bonus terms, and run the numbers before paying in. Five checks cover nearly every trap, and they take a few minutes with a calculator. If any answer is unclear, ask support in writing and keep the reply.

  1. Base and multiplier: is it bonus only, or deposit plus bonus? Multiply it out.
  2. Expected cost: turnover x (1 – RTP). Compare it with the bonus amount.
  3. Time: turnover divided by your normal stake, against the hours in the deadline.
  4. Caps: the bet limit, the conversion cap, and any cap on spin winnings.
  5. Eligibility: excluded countries, excluded payment methods and the list of games that count.

Declining a bonus is a valid choice. Most cashiers let you opt out before paying in, and cash play has no deadline, no bet cap and no conversion limit.

Questions readers send us about bonus playthrough

Is 25x better than 40x?

Only when both use the same base. 25x on deposit plus bonus, as at Slot Owl, means more betting than 40x on the bonus alone for any match below about 167%. On a 100% match, 25x deposit plus bonus equals 50x the bonus, so compare offers after converting them to one base.

What happens if I withdraw before finishing the playthrough?

The bonus and anything won with it are normally removed. At BitStarz, cancelling forfeits the bonus and its winnings, and the deposit stays tied to the bonus until you finish or cancel. Some casinos let you withdraw your untouched cash balance first.

Do free spins count as wager-free?

Only if the terms say so. Winsly, Goldroll, Quickz, Taste Vegas and Slot Pony pay spin winnings without playthrough, within caps. At BitStarz and 7Bit Casino, spin winnings carry the same 40x or 35x as the cash bonus.

Why does my blackjack not reduce the wagering?

Table and live games count little or nothing. BitStarz weights them at about 5%, and the Malta and Estonia-licensed sites count only games listed in their Bonus Games section. Use eligible slots for playthrough.

Can I lose more than the bonus is worth?

On average, yes, with most cash matches. A 45x playthrough on a EUR 35 deposit and EUR 35 bonus has an expected cost of about EUR 126. You cannot lose more than your balance, though, so the worst case is losing the deposit.

What happened to free bets and no-deposit offers?

They still exist but are smaller. No-deposit wagering counts the bonus amount only, and BitStarz caps cash-outs from no-deposit spins at 100 EUR/USD/USDT. Sportsbook bonuses on the Malta and Estonia terms default to 16x the bonus.

Bonuses are a way to extend play, not a source of income. Limits and self-exclusion tools are explained on our responsible gambling page.
